Using Tile Adhesive for Texture

So someone recently asked me if you could use tile adhesive in a texture mix instead of the stucco that I usually use. Well I had to say that I did not know if tile adhesive would work as a painting base as I had never tried it. I had tried plenty of powder based and ready mixed plaster type compounds but not the tile adhesive as I think it might be a bit ‘gooey’!

Well recently I went to see a local gallery – it was set up by a guy who just uses whichever shop is available in a shopping centre that has a few empty spaces. There was a wide variety of artwork (and a wide range of quality) but a few of the pieces that I really liked were heavily textured so I checked them out more carefully.

The description of those pieces said that they had been made with tile adhesive amongst other things and so I guess that is the answer – yes you can use tile adhesive as a texture medium. I will be giving it a try once I have run out of my supply of stucco (which I have had to get abroad as I can’t find it in the UK) and so that might be a great alternative for me too.
